Perched on Crystal Avenue, this home was Glen McFarlane’s most technically challenging build — and one of his finest. Set on a site crossed by a natural watercourse, extensive and complex groundworks were required before construction could even begin. Designed as a weekend retreat for a Sydney spinal specialist physician, the home features a striking concrete spine through its centre — a nod to both the client’s profession and the structural heart of the house. Collaborating once again Studio Joan, Glen brought warmth and soul to the build with timber ceilings that flow throughout, paired with thoughtfully placed LED lighting to showcase future artwork. The backyard is a quiet triumph — a beautifully hand-crafted stonework garden that blends vegetables, flowers and function, making the most of the land’s natural contours. This home is a true study in resilience, creativity and craftsmanship.
